THIS WEEK AT ABINGTON PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH

November 12, 2017

What is the oil that keeps our lights burning?  That is the question we will be exploring in worship this Sunday, November 12.  Scripture passages are Joshua 24:1-3a; 14-25 and Matthew 25:1-13.  If you think it would be enriching to study the scripture passages ahead of worship on Sundays, there are two groups that do that.  One meets from 7:45-8:45 a.m. and the other meets from 4:15-5:00 p.m. on Wednesdays in the Parlor.  Come join us for the exploration time that is likely to add to your worship experiences on Sundays.

Following the 10:00 worship service this Sunday, please stay on for a pancake brunch in the parish hall that raises funds for our youth scholarship fund.  At that brunch we hope to show a video of Rev. Diane sending us greetings from Pakistan. Pakistan?!  She is there to further build connectional ties with our partners-in-ministry, the Presbyterian Educational Board of Pakistan.  Friend of our congregation (and mother to certain members of our congregation) Veda Gill is executive director of educational programs that oversees quite a number of Presbyterian schools in Pakistan, which provide education for many who would not have it otherwise.  Diane is part of a group that will be seeing that first-hand and she will be preaching at Veda’s Presbyterian Church in Lahore this Sunday!

Thanksgiving is coming!  Please put on your calendar the annual community inter-faith Thanksgiving service that this year will be hosted by Old York Road Temple – Beth Am at 971 Old York Road.  The service will be Tuesday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m.  A number of choirs will be singing (including more than one from APC) and someone you know as the new kid on the block will be preaching. Canned goods will be collected at the service to be used at Interfaith Alliance Food Bank.  Our Deacons are also working on putting together Thanksgiving food baskets for families in need.  The goal is 40-45 food baskets.  A monetary gift of $40 covers the cost of one basket.  Please include Food Baskets acct #929 and your giving number on your check.

Well before the day of Thanksgiving, I am giving thanks for those who have already turned in their pledge card for planned giving for next year.  166 pledges totaling $552,000 has come in.  We are hoping for about 70 more pledges to come in to enable the Session to adopt a budget that grows our ministry in this place.  Please drop your yellow pledge card in the mail to the church office or bring it with you to worship to put in the offering plate.  Or if you’re not sure where that pledge card went, the office would be happy to send you another one, or you can pick one up from the pew rack during worship.  Thanks for your generosity that helps our Session effectively plan for our ministry in the coming year!

With joy, we have baptisms planned for the next five Sundays.  God is doing a wonderful within and through this congregation!

With gratitude for your faithfulness,

Rev. Kirby Lawrence Hill
