As I write this the choir, the orchestra, the dancers, and the cast of Amahl and the Night Visitors are preparing for the preview performance at Rydal Park. We look forward to the performance in the sanctuary on Jan 15th at 3pm. Amahl is a short opera that tells the story of a poor family who welcomes the Three Magi into their home, and how the Christ child changes all their hearts and lives.
Some Christians observe an Epiphany tradition on January 6th called “chalking the door”. The head of the household chalks the following pattern of numbers and letters on the front of the house:
The numbers represent the current year, and the letters have a dual meaning. They are the first letters of the names Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, the traditional names of the Magi. The letters CMB also represent the traditional blessing Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless this house.”
As we welcome the Christ Child once again into our hearts and homes in this new year, receive this blessing for your hearth and home, and for our community home here at APC:
“Holy One, visit this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who enter here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may show your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen”
(prayer adapted from Carmelite tradition)
May Christ bless this house!
