PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS

New Member Classes are held throughout the year.  Speak to a pastor or call the office for the next meeting dates.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH

Acolytes.   Third to sixth graders serve at the 9 A.M. or 11 A.M. worship service.

Child Care.  Infant/ toddler care on Sundays during the worship services (10 A.M. only in the summer) for ages 36 months and younger.  We welcome your children and your occasional help.

Church School.  Age 30 months to grade 5, Sundays, 9 A.M. Grades 6 to 12, Sundays, 10 A.M.  See the booklet, Education at Abington Presbyterian, to read about the new curriculum.

Confirmation Class.  A program of study and discussion for youth who are to make their profession of faith.

Explorers.  Meeting and fellowship for grades 3-5, Wednesdays, 4 P.M.

Youth Fellowships.   Grades 6-8 and 9-12.  Sundays, 4 P.M.  Supper, 5:30 P.M.

Vacation Bible School.  Call the church office in the spring for information.

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

Adult Forum.   Contemporary problems from a Christian perspective.  Sunday mornings, 9 to 10 A.M.

Kerygma.  Discussions of theological topics.  Sunday mornings, 9 to 10 A.M., room 108.

Wednesday in the Word.  A fresh look at the scriptures. Wednesdays at 4 P.M., room 108.

Short courses.  Scheduled in the fall and spring.

MUSIC

Bell Choirs:

     Crusader Bells.  Grades 5-6.  Wednesday evening.

     Festive Ringers .  Grades 7-12.  Tuesday evening.

     Jubilee Ringers.  Adults.  Wednesday evening.

     Celebration Ringers.  Advanced adults.  Thursday evening.

Chancel Choir.   Provides choral music at the 11 A.M. worship service.  Rehearses on Thursday, 7:30 P.M.

Chapel Choir.  Seventh through twelfth graders provide the choral music at the first worship service.  Rehearses on Sundays,  6 P.M.

Chime and Crusader Choirs.   Opportunities for children to learn musical skills and use them in service to the Lord.  Wednesdays.  Grades K-2, 4 P.M.; Grades 3-6, 5 P.M.

Music as Abington.  Annual series based on our two concert organizations:

     Abington Symphony Orchestra.   A premier group of musicians from the church and the community, rehearsing on Monday evenings.  Concerts are presented throughout the year.  If you have proficient musical skills and experience, call to arrange for an informal audition.

     Oratorio Choir.  The Chancel Choir augmented by singers from the community presents several programs during the year.  Rehearses on Thursday, 8:30 P.M.

LIFE OF THE CONGREGATION

Adult Fellowship.   Picnics, dinners, road rallies, campouts, theater outings, service projects.

Ambassadors.  Join a visitation team to contact prospective new members, or bake bread for the teams.

Audio-Visual Committee.   Individuals with A-V experience are needed to record the morning service and special events.

Blood Pressure Screening conducted by the Parish Nurses.  First Sunday of the month in the chapel after each service.

Bowling.   Monday evenings, 8:45 P.M.  Open to all. 

Church Office Volunteers.   Help one morning a week.

Coffee Hour.   Conversation and refreshments for church members and visitors in the Parish Hall between the early and late Sunday services. 

Come Double Club.   Couples of average age 55 or more.  Monthly meetings, service projects, dinners, card playing, and other events

Committee for Older Adults.   Serves our older members and provides important services for the entire church.

Delivery of Flowers.   Volunteers take the flowers from the Sunday services to shut-ins and people in the hospital.

Donation of Flowers.    To provide flowers for the worship services, call the office.

Greeters. Church members welcome people arriving for the Sunday services.  To participate, call the office.

Historical Society.   Preserves and depicts the rich history of Abington Presbyterian Church.

Landscape Committee.   Cares for the flower beds and landscaping.

Library.  Check out books and sermon tapes at the far end of the Parish Hall.

Men's Christian Fellowship.   Meets on 2nd and 4th Saturdays of the month, 8 to 9 A.M., for Bible study, discussion, and Christian fellowship.

Mothers’ Discussion Group.   Fourth  Monday, 7:30 P.M.  Meets in members’ homes to share experiences and discuss issues of parenting.
A second group for parents of very young children begins in January 2003.

Naomi's Group.   A fellowship group for widows and single women.

Parish Nurses.   Registered nurses are needed for a variety of volunteer services to the congregation.

Prayer Chain.   To request prayers, use the pink card in the pews.  To join the Chain, call the church office.

Presbyterian Women.  A caring community of women dedicated to Bible study and the support of the worldwide mission of the church.  Circles meet once a month in the morning or evening.  Luncheons, teas, dinners. 

Stephen Ministry.  One Church member reaching out to another in time of need.

Tuesday Morning Work Crew.   Performs a wide range of maintenance work for the church.

Ushers.  A team serves approximately once every four weeks at one of the worship services. 

Visitation Committee.   Members of the church visit one or more members who are homebound. 

WAGS.   Wednesday Afternoon Group meets the third Wednesday of the month for lunch and an entertaining program.

Wedding Planning.    Call the church office and ask for the Wedding Program brochure.

SERVICE TO THE COMMUNITY

Adopt A Highway.  Cares for Susquehanna Road near the church. 

Boy Scouts.  Troop 1 meets Mondays at  7:15 P.M. in the recreation room. 

Deacons Blood Drive.  The Red Cross collects blood at the church in May and November.

Deacons Programs.   With your financial support, food contributions and time, the Deacons maintain a Food Closet and minister to APC members and to local families.

Music at Abington.   The Abington Symphony Orchestra and the Oratorio Choir present programs throughout the year.

Nursery School.   Five classes for three year olds to pre-kindergarten. 

Nursery School Child Development Com­mit­tee.  Directs the Nursery School and Play Groups program.

Play Groups.  One- or two-day a week groups for children 18-36 months.  Parents participate on a rotating basis.

INDEPENDENT SUPPORT GROUPS

Grief Recovery.  A program to help the bereaved during the grieving and mourning period.  Twelve meetings, Tuesday 2-4 P.M., in the fall and spring

New Directions.  A support group for discussion and information about depression and bipolar disorder.  First and third Tuesdays of the month, 7:30 P.M. 

The Compassionate Friends.  A support organization for family members after the death of a child.  First Monday of the month, 7:30 P.M.

MISSION TO THE WORLD

Aid for Friends.  Meets on the third Thursday morning of the month to prepare a week's meals for shut-ins.

Cradle of Hope.  Provides temporary housing to single mothers and children in Montgomery County, ministers to their physical, emotional and spiritual needs within a Christian environment, and moves them toward self-reliance.  Donations of infant clothing and care items are accepted at the church office.

Habitat for Humanity.   Construction of a home in the Germantown area, of which this church was the primary sponsor, has now been completed.  We are continuing to encourage our members to make contributions of their time, talents, and  money to Habitat. 

Inter-Faith Hospitality Network.  Opportunities each December for volunteers to assist local families who have lost their living arrangements

John Gloucester House.   A Presbytery community mission in South Philadelphia, with many ministries and opportunities for time, talents, and financial support.

Mission Giving.   Our support for mission goes to national and overseas missions through the Presbytery and the national church, local mission projects, and also One Great Hour of Sharing in the Lenten season and other offerings throughout the year.

Peacemaking . We are partially supporting Joanna Flanders Thomas, who managed a prison project in South Africa, in her two-year assignment to teach conflict resolution and human development skills in Philadelphia.  Part of our October peacemaking offering also supports this effort. 

Presbyterian Children's Village.  Since 1877, the mission of the Village has been to provide help and healing to children and families in crisis.  You are invited to respond to some of the needs.
